The fundamental formula for calculating PPM is based on the ratio of the mass of the solute (the substance being dissolved) to the total mass of the solution, multiplied by one million.

PPM = (Mass of Solute / Mass of Solution) × 1,000,000

To convert a PPM value into a percentage (parts per hundred), the conversion is straightforward. Since 1% is equal to 10,000 PPM, you simply divide the PPM value by 10,000.

Let’s say you’re preparing a nutrient solution for your hydroponic garden. You need to dissolve 750 milligrams (mg) of a fertilizer into 5 liters (L) of water.

  1. Unify the Units: The PPM formula relies on a mass-to-mass ratio. We must first convert the volume of water to a mass. The density of water is very close to 1 kg/L, which means 1 L of water has a mass of 1 kg (or 1,000,000 mg).

  2. Apply the Formula: Now, insert these values into the PPM formula.
